Establishment year 1977
Company description
Established in 1977 as a specialized unit of the African Union, then known as the Organization of African Unity, the African Telecommunications Union (ATU) underwent a major transformation in 1999. It shifted from being solely a public-sector agency to a collaboration between public and private stakeholders in the information and communication technology (ICT) sector. ATU serves as a platform for ICT stakeholders to create effective policies and strategies which can increase access to information infrastructure and services. In addition, ATU also represents its members' interests at international conferences and encourages projects which facilitate the integration of regional markets, attract investment in ICT infrastructure, and develop institutional and human resources.
