GITHONGO TEA FACTORY CO LTD - Meru, Kenya

Tea was first grown here in 1961 and most of the farms were established in 1990’s. The site was preferred because of topography, infrastructure, centrality and future production potential. The need to construct the factory rose from problems experienced as a result of acute congestion of tea at Imenti tea factory, long distances covered by the leaf carriers leading to huge losses and existing potential for future production.
The land on which the factory stands on was bought from the local residents and covers 19.75 acres. Githongo Tea Factory Co. Ltd. catchment area has a total of 4,985 registered growers with a total of 957 Ha under tea, giving an average farm size of 0.19Ha.
Our recent tea census stands at 8,240,184 tea bushes. The growers deliver the leaf to the 47 coded greenleaf collection centres on daily basis apart from Sundays and public holidays.
