The Nairobi Security Information Centre was founded in March 2012. It was started with the aim of providing accurate, reliable and timely security information to organizations, businesses and security consumers with credible information on the security trends so that people are enabled to make safe decisions.

Prior to that, the same service had existed for six years as a security update offered in collaboration with major security companies. This dependency had obvious drawbacks and this necessitated the move to have the NSIC as a full-fledged independent security information centre.
